Retailer limits on codes?

Is it common for retailers to limit how much one referral code/person can earn? Do you monitor that in any way and remove potentially expired codes?

This varies a lot, some don’t seem to have any limits (like Amex), but some do (like Booking.com), but they change. If you use a referral link or code that isn’t valid the retailer or company will usually be clear it hasn’t worked! There are ‘ratings’ on referralcodes.com so you can see if anything is not working…
